The Levi Tope Family

Recent information identifies John Tope as Johann Heinrich Daub who was born on August 4, 1743 in Evangelisch Siegen Westfalen Preussen.[i]  This is conjecture, and like other information about John requires verification.
A Jacob Toup rented 100 acres in the Carrollton Manor, which is located close to the
Virginia border where Harper's Ferry is located.[ii]  West Virginia, where Harper's Ferry is located, was formed later from portions of Virginia.  Whether this is the Jacob Doub, progenitor of the Tope line is not known, but is a possibility.
According to Melancthon, The Topes lived for a time in Redstone, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  But at what time they moved to that place we are not told. . . It is from here that the two boys moved when they came to Ohio, in the year 1800.[iii] Census records that show a George Tope living in Redstone, Fayette County, Bullskin Township, Pennsylvania in 1790 support this statement.[iv]

More about Levi Tope
Also according to Melancthon Tope, Levi was a teacher and farmer.[v]  He married Sarah Davis in Carroll County, Ohio, on 17 June 1838.  Robert Barnhill, Justice of Peace in Union Township, performed the ceremony.[vi]
Two children, Hiram J. and Martha A., were born to Levi and Sarah in Carroll County, Ohio, before the family moved west.  An obituary for Hiram J. Tope gives his birth date as 30 October 1839, and the certificate of death for Martha Alice Tope gives her birth date as 2 March 1841.  More information on these children can be found in Chapters 4 and 5.
Levi worked at his father's gristmill at Petersburg, Carroll County, Ohio, and obtained his education in the common schools where he received training in music and later became an instructor.[vii]  He continued to work at the mill for some time after he married Sarah and then moved westward and purchased property in Richland Township, Putnam County, Ohio.[viii]
